Plan My Walk — Walking Kit Checklist

Plan a route →

Good kit doesn't replace a good plan, but it makes the plan work when the weather turns or the day runs long. This is the kit we'd want in the pack for a day on UK hills and moorland. Use it as a checklist for yourself or your group.

After dark

Winter days are short, and walks often take longer than planned. Plan My Walk warns you when your estimated finish is after sunset.

Head torch + spare batteries

Take a head torch on every walk, not just the ones you expect to finish late. A head torch keeps your hands free for map and compass. Pack spare batteries, or a power bank if it's rechargeable.

Wet weather

UK hill weather changes quickly, and wind plus rain gets you cold fast, even in summer.

Waterproof jacket

Look for a hood that turns with your head, taped seams and pit zips or vents so you don't overheat on the climbs. Waterproof trousers are worth carrying too.

Footwear & poles

Walking boots

On rough or boggy ground, boots with a grippy sole and some ankle support are much safer than trainers. Wear new boots in on short walks before a big day.

Walking socks

Cushioned socks that wick moisture are the cheapest way to prevent blisters. Pack a spare dry pair.

Walking poles

Poles take load off your knees on steep descents and help you balance at stream crossings. Pick adjustable ones that pack down short enough to strap to your bag.

Day pack

Backpack

A 20–35 litre day pack holds spare layers, food, water and safety kit. A hip belt and a rain cover (or a dry bag inside) are both worth having.

Water bottle

Take at least a litre, and more on hot days or long climbs. Don't count on finding safe water on the route.

Group leaders

Leading Scouts, DofE or a club walk? These go in the leader's pack alongside the route card.

Group first aid kit

Get one sized for your party, and check what's in it before each trip. Add blister plasters, any personal medication and a survival or group shelter bag.

GPS / personal tracker

A handheld GPS or satellite tracker backs up your map and compass and lets base follow your progress. Treat it as a backup, never the main way you navigate.
